What the term distinguishes
A rental business is not a retailer that happens to take the goods back. The difference is structural, and it changes what a customer is buying:
Retail transfers ownership. The transaction ends when the customer pays.
Rental transfers possession for a stated term. The transaction ends when the goods return.
Leasing also transfers possession, but over a long term, with sustained use or eventual
acquisition as the intent.
Why the term is published here
schema.org types a business by what the business offers, not by whether the goods come back. A
clothing rental company is accurately a ClothingStore — the goods are clothing — but
nothing in that type says the clothing returns.
The one rental-specific business type schema.org carries is AutoRental, which is
vehicles. At the level of an individual offer, GoodRelations supplies
businessFunction LeaseOut, which is precise and correct — but an offer
is not an organization, and a brand needs to be describable before any offer is read.
So the gap is real and narrow: there is no general way to say this business rents. This term fills that gap at a resolvable address.
How to use the term
Reference the term from additionalType, alongside the most accurate schema.org
base type for the goods:

"@type": "ClothingStore",
"name": "Example Outfitters",

}
ClothingStore
alone. The base type carries the goods; this term carries the relationship. If the term is
ignored, nothing false has been said — only something has gone unsaid.Where individual rental offers are published, pair the term with GoodRelations at the offer level, which states the same relationship in a vocabulary already widely read:
